When the Niagara Community Foundation was launched in 2000, none of its founders would have expected that the foundation would be awarding more than $1million after only 14 years. But this milestone is exactly what was achieved this year. In 2001, the foundation awarded $9,500 to six charities. In 2014, 283 grants totaling more than $1.08 million were awarded. 

So what does it mean to”Eat to Live vs. Live to Eat”?  The McGraw-Hill Dictionary of American Idioms and Phrasal Verbs stated that the saying “Eat to live, not live to eat” means ‘ Do not be gluttonous; eating should not be your favourite activity, but something you do to maintain your health.’

The Town of Pelham received the WALK Friendly Community Designation from Green Communities Canada.  Awarded during the ACT Canada’s Sustainable Mobility and Healthy Communities Summit in Markham, Ontario, Pelham received a Bronze designation for the Town’s progress toward walkability. Pelham joins two other 2014 winners, the City of Mississauga (Silver) and Town of Minto (Bronze)—no municipality has yet attained Gold.

 

Mel Groom has been making a difference in her community in so many ways – at the Welland/Pelham Chamber of Commerce, with the United Way of South Niagara and as a board member of the Niagara Community Foundation.
