The Town of Pelham has opted out of retail cannabis. The decision was made on January 21, 2019, at the Town of Pelham’s regularly scheduled meeting of Council; one day before the provincial deadline for municipalities to opt in or out.  

On January 10, 2019, Gail Belchior of Money Matters Services & Solutions Inc. presented the Welland Curling Club with a $2,600 cheque to go towards the ‘Buy a Rock’ fundraising campaign.

The Pelham Public Library has launched a new Indigenous Book Collection that was made possible through the generous donation from the Ignite the Spirit Foundation this month.  A new portable bookshelf was also donated to house this collection.

A warm lunch with a friend or relative will make a cold Friday in January special for local high school graduates.  The 17thannual Soup’s On! is serving bowls of favourite and unusual soups during a scholarship fundraiser. The tasty fundraiser serves soup samples during three sittings (11 a.m., Noon, 1p.m.) on Friday, Jan. 25, in St. Kevin parish hall, 303 Niagara St. in Welland.

Registration for the 2019 season is open. Pelham leagues are typically filled by early March, as fields need to be booked and teams set well in advance of season kick-off. We don't want to have to turn anyone away so please register early! Discounted early bird registration rates are until February 28th with rates increasing on March 1st, so take advantage of some savings by registering early!

Please be advised that due to an upcoming winter storm beginning Saturday, Winter Parking Regulations are now in effect in Pelham.

NO parking on ANY Town streets at any time, to allow for winter maintenance operations.

Roads staff will be concentrating on all main arterial roadways first, collector roads, and then rural roads. Secondary roads and subdivisions will be cleared when the storm ends or if conditions permit.

An Extreme Cold Weather Alert will go into effect on on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2019, as temperatures are expected to drop below -15 C.  The Extreme Cold Weather Alert is intended to mobilize outreach workers and community agencies, recommend precautions for the general public during extreme cold weather, and offer information on the location of shelters and additional resources.

Following municipal elections last Fall, new City and Town Councils across Ontario started their 2018-2022 term of office on December 1, 2018. In addition to their formal inaugurations in early-December, municipal Staff helped orient old and new Councillors alike and the work of municipal governance began.

We have had a sighting of a large coyote behind Beechwood Crescent / Kunda Park area  Though it is not normal for a coyote to approach a human, they will in fact approach a dog, cat or any other small animal if given the opportunity. The MNR is advising to keep your dogs leashed and close to you while out walking and ensure cats remain indoors especially during dusk to dawn when coyotes are most active.

The Libraries in Niagara Cooperative is reaching out to encourage our communities to read for 15 minutes on January 25, 2019 to help celebrate Family Literacy Day. LiNC libraries would like to join the Read for 15 challenge with the goal of promoting the importance of literacy in our communities.  And, we hope to become one of the most ‘readerly’ libraries in the province.

Year to date, residential property transactions total 6,429 v.s. 7,289 for 2017 and 5,809 in 2013. This represents a decrease of 11.8% versus 2017 and an increase of 10.7% versus 2013.
